Y3 / Y4 / Y5 & Y6

Miss J Steel

Class Teacher

Mrs A Rodgers

Teaching Assistant/HLTA/Service Pupil Support

Hello, my name is Miss Steel. I am the year 3,4,5 and 6 teacher and love teaching children in Key Stage 2. Our individual mix of year groups in Armstrong class means that the children are exposed to a wide range of learning and ideas, I love this as it makes every day different and always interesting and exciting.

This mixed age class benefits the children as the younger children in the class are exposed to more complex suggestions and opinions from older children, this will challenge their thinking and motivate them. The older children are able to support those in younger year groups, the process of teaching someone else something is proven to aid in the remembering of learning and shows a very good level of understanding, so it is brilliant that they get this opportunity every day.

This mix of year groups also means that I have the wonderful job of teaching children from the start of their journey in Key Stage 2, all the way up until they go to high school. It is wonderful to watch the children grow and see them move up and on to their next journey.

The children in my class are all lovely friends to each other and follow our school values of 'kindness, courage, acceptance, resilience and respect' all of the time. This means that in Armstrong class we value the thoughts and ideas of everyone, and we all support and take care of each other.  This nurturing classroom culture is something I am very passionate about as I believe that in a supportive environment, the most fun and learning possible can happen.

My other passions are teaching Maths and PE, I love watching children working through a problem in Maths and then having that 'lightbulb moment' where all of their hard work comes together, and they are able to tackle the problem. Maths requires a great deal of perseverance and determination, much like in sports where you have to keep on practicing something in order for it to become second nature and fully understood.

Armstrong Class have a fantastic teaching assistant, Mrs Rodgers, who is very experienced in supporting children in all areas of the curriculum and in all ages throughout the school. We are a great team and love teaching our wonderful class, we have a lot of fun in our class every day.

In my own time, some of my favourite things to do are playing tennis, spending time with friends and family or walking my two dogs called Hugo and Bryn.
